Fugitive emissions are the invisible problem that polluters would rather ignore. These are gases and chemical vapors that escape from industrial equipment through leaks, faulty seals, open valves, and broken pipe joints without actually passing through a smokestack or vent. Unlike a visible plume from a factory chimney, fugitive emissions creep out constantly and silently. That quiet nature creates a unique legal challenge for anyone harmed by the fumes. You cannot always see the source, but the law has tools to hold polluters accountable.

The most common sources of fugitive emissions are oil refineries, chemical plants, natural gas compressor stations, and storage tank farms. Equipment such as pumps, connectors, flanges, and pressure relief valves are notorious for leaking methane, benzene, hydrogen sulfide, and other volatile organic compounds. Over time, even well-maintained facilities leak. Neglected facilities leak far worse. These chemicals do not stay on the property. They drift into neighboring neighborhoods, schools, and farms.
